With the oncoming Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer is neigh. Although the Autumnal Equinox isn't until September 22, this months beginning marks the dreaded days of hall passes and pledge weeks. If you aren't already, many of you will soon be on your way to college or some other fun learning establishment. You have but precious little time to mark your mind with lasting memories of your glorious times in the sun, so get to it! For those of us ready to reminisce about the last few months, let us away!

something about my hands

a subject matter of happenstance

Humbled by her comments of his best works
I bring shame to the assumption of the virgin
for my tattered hands aren't art
but made for the toils of working

Words about the lighting
and the colors on my arms
words like these
should leave one charmed

Perhaps a sincere word
should have flowed off my fingers
instead of an out dated reference
from mid 90's teenagers

Perhaps this form of a thank you
will give you cause to return
maybe it will make you leave
but for now this will have to do
this strange apology

My mother used to say my name belonged to handsome men
quarter backs and kings
letter man jackets and class rings
I was none of those things

Who would love me
me with my crooked eyes and lips to hide
the crooked teeth inside
my mouth that's too wide

I too, will be forever a bachelor
no plans for wedding bells and cutting cake
for my type to marry there should be no debate
and yet these issues still divide these troubled states

My father taught me how to hide
behind this wall of masculinity
when I would pick my mother flowers
he used to chastise me

He would make me take off my shirt
I would cry and cover my naked skin
how I hated this man
working on that broken engine

When the time came
I would run into my shared room
I'm still there, in the dark
& I'll come out sometime soon

In the meantime
before I venture into the sun
I'll bring the color into my closet
and leave the black to my back just once

In the sun I'll wait
where the color fades the fastest
it won't matter when I'm gone
where you scatter my ashes

but for now
I fall in love with the world when I wake
for my time here is limited
and I wont let it go to waste
